Well, it is important to discuss, whether music should be a subject in our schools. I recently came across a statistic Music Report of 2021. It said that majority of music teachers believe the cost of music lessons is a barrier for learners. Further, many children and adults who have never played an instrument say this was due to the cost. Now, if we think about that for a moment. Music is one of the most profound ways to express emotions, which is being kept away from a significant number of our population because of cost. It feels like a lost opportunity.
Some people argue that music shouldn’t be a school subject. But I ask: “Why not?” Education is more than just
math, science, and literature. It’s about building well-rounded individuals, capable of critical thinking, creativity, and expressing themselves. Consider this: We teach physical education to keep our bodies healthy. Isn’t it just as essential to nourish our soul and minds with music?
Music education does more than teach one to play an instrument. It fosters discipline, teamwork, patience, and
creativity. It’s a language that transcends borders, cultures, and backgrounds. By removing music from schools,
aren’t we taking away an essential tool for holistic growth?
Moreover, when music is offered in schools, it levels the playing field. It means that regardless of a child’s financial background, they have the opportunity to experience and learn music. Remember the 25% of children I mentioned earlier who couldn’t afford music lessons? In a school setting, they no longer have to be part of that statistic.
To those who say that academic subjects are more important, I say music complements them. Music involves math in rhythms, science in sound production, and history in its evolution. It’s intertwined with every academic subject in more ways than one can imagine.
In conclusion, while cost might be a barrier outside school, introducing music as a fundamental subject in schools can break down this barrier. It’s our responsibility to ensure every child has the chance to experience the magic of music, irrespective of their background. Let’s not deprive our children of an education that truly sings to the soul. I firmly believe music should remain a vital subject in our schools.
